An apology

We published an article on how to build an ubuntu server yesterday. This article turned out to be substantially similar to an article by Falko Timme which appears on http://www.howtoforge.com .

We have pulled the article from our site as it is not attributed properly and we should not have accepted it.

We regret that we didn't do our homework before publishing this article, and we offer our apologies to our readers and Falko and howtoforge.com. We promise to do a better job in the future.

LBD: Photo Caption Fun

We recently added a "Photo Caption Contest" section to our ever growing image gallery. It's not really a contest though because you don't really win a prize for having the best caption - It's all just for fun. Some really funny captions have been posted so far, with more on the way I'm sure. Check it out if you've got a few minutes to kill.

RSS News Feed @ LWD

I've had a few people recently ask if we had an RSS news feed available on LWD. These people were either interested in syndicating our news on another site, or popping the URL into their RSS news reader. We've had this available for sometime now, but it wasn't configured very well. So I made a few changes, and am ready to release the following URL (if you don't know what RSS feeds are, this link will probaby mean nothing to you):

We still have a handful of articles from the old site design that haven't been ported over to the new format. Last night, I was able to get another batch of them converted. Below is a list of some of our older articles, that are now available:

Thermaltake Golden Org (Model 370)
GeForce2 MX - Asus 7100 vs. VisionTek
Sony CRX160E-A1 12x/8x/32x CD-RW
OCZ Monster II Socket Cooler
Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse
AVerTV USB by AVerMedia
Xyloc Wireless PC Security device
AMD 1.2 GHz Thunderbird

.htaccess Problems
Posted by Fido on Wednesday, July 28 @ 15:19:36 PDT (6940 reads)
(Read More... | Score: 5)

This site uses a rather complex .htaccess file to do a whole bunch of on the fly URL re-writing and page re-directions. Late last night, something happened to this file and it became corrupted, forcing all requests for the main page into an infinite loop. I have put in place a temporary .htaccess for now to keep the site functioning as close to normal as I can. During this time, you may stumble across a link or two that isn't working as it should. I'm hoping to have a fixed version back in place sometime tonight, so if you're having issues with something specific try back a little later.

UPDATE: All problems associated with the .htaccess file should be corrected now. I have rebuilt the file and all is well.

LBD Image Gallery Online

We've added a new image gallery to our forums! There's still a few minor bugs that need to be worked out, but for the most part things are ready to roll. Feel free to browse around a bit and let me know what you think of it so far. The albums are broken down into two catagories - one is available to the general public and the other is restricted so that only logged in forum members can view the images. Forum registration is simple and easy if you're not already signed up. Enjoy!

Site Upgrade (patches)

Updated the site with the latest and greatest patches for PHP-Nuke tonight. Haven't found any new bugs, but we still have some old bugs that still haven't been corrected. If you see anything wrong, or something that just doesn't look right please let me know ASAP by posting a comment on this news item. I'll let it run over-night and if nothing new crops up I'll leave the patches in place.

Thank you for supporting LWD!

If you are not familiar with SETI, it stands for "the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence", a group of scientists got together, pointed their radio telescopes towards the sky and began recording the radio signals coming in from space. At first this was brilliant until they realized that even scanning small portions of the sky produce HUGE amounts of raw data that had to be processed and analyzed to see if an intelligent signal had been received. Since they didn't have the budget to process all this data they asked the world to help them out. A few million desktop PCs is a whole doggy bag of processing power just waiting to do something useful.

Our SETI Group (or team as some call it) has been in existance since 8/15/2000 and has grown to a whopping 747 members! The total number of completed WU's for our team is nearing the 3 million mark barrier and the team is currently ranked 29th in the World for the most amount of "work" completed.

If this sounds interesting to you, and want to join us in our search for ET, all you have to do is download the SETI@Home software, install it, create your account, and then go here to join the LittleWhiteDog group! If you want to check on your individual stats, all you have to do is visit the Official LWD SETI team page. We also have our very own Daily News Section dedicated to the team that you really need to see even if you're not on the team!

If you need any help at all getting things setup or joining the team, just drop by our forums and we'll be more than happy to lend you a paw or two. We have an entire category dedicated to our SETI Team, to help provide assistance and encouragement to our team members.

New Article @ LWD: An introduction to SSL Certificates
Posted by Fido on Monday, March 01 @ 19:51:12 PST (5005 reads)
(Read More... | Score: 5)

We have just published a new article titled An introduction to SSL Certificates. This article covers in great detail what SSL Certificates are, how they are used, and how they are issued and trusted. So, if you've ever been curious about SSL Certificates, or just wanted to learn more about them to better protect yourself from the "bad people out there", make sure you check it out!

It all comes down to trust, authenticity and integrity. If I'm using a secure web site - say, when doing my banking online - then I want to know that the connection used is genuinely secure from tampering, or even impersonation. The certificate presented by my bank to my web browser is how the bank assures me of its compliance with those conditions. I then choose whether or not to trust my bank's assurances by checking who has vouched for my bank and deciding whether or not I trust them - and also anyone who has vouched for them further up the chain - in turn.

Dead Bugs

Killed a couple more bugs on the site today. After the recent security update, the ability to vote for a News Article was broken. Well, not really broken since you could still click the button... it just never added the score to the total. This problem has been corrected, along with a bug on the Stories Archive, and the Comment Pages not redirecting properly after making a post. We're back to a fully stable state once again.

Patch Creates More Bugs

Well, I was a bit hesitant at first but I've finally applied a few new patches to the site. It was a toss-up between security and stability, and security won.

Most of the custom modifications I made to the original scripts have been put back in place, but there are still a few more floating around (I knew I should have done a better job documenting things). Any remaining bugs, or custom modifications that are missing will be corrected soon. Thanks to all for your support of LWD!

Beta Testing: User Point System

I decided to start BETA testing a User Points System today. Not quite sure how well this system will work at this point, as it is something new in Version 7.0 of PHPNuke

Basically how it works is like this... certain actions on this site are assigned a point value. If you, as a registered user of this site, do one of these actions you earn points. There really is no use for these points right now, but we have the ability to do things such as turning off banner ads for people who are at a certain point level. The possibilities are endless here, but like I said I'm not quite sure how well it will work out at this point.

On the right hand-side of this page, there is now a new block titled "Top User Points". This lists the 15 people who have earned the most points.

As of right now, the points you can earn for certain functions are as follows.... Read more

More articles and reviews available

I was able to convert about 14 more articles / reviews from the old site design format this weekend! Most of them are listed in the table at the top of this page, or you can view them all by clicking Read More.

If there are any articles in particular you're looking for that I haven't posted yet let, me know and I'll see if I can move it up on queue. Enjoy!

New Design Progress

The improvements on the site continue. Not nearly as fast as I would have hoped, since it was quite a busy week for me. But I'm hoping to get a whole lot more of our articles & reviews posted this weekend. One thing that was recently updated, that I hope you will find useful is our downloads section. We've got about handful of links in the database so far, but more will be added all the time. In addition, if you know of a download that others might find useful, please feel free to submit it to our site using this form.

Have a great weekend!

Site Status

Things are starting to come together on the site now. Yesterday was sure a rough one though. I spent almost 16 hours straight fixing bugs and putting things in order. Hopefully, most of them are behind us now and I can start importing more of the content, articles, and reviews during the course of the next few days.

In other news, we've had a number of people sign up for an account on the new site, which is great! Even better is the fact that the people who are signing up are submitting news stories to us, submitting links, and commenting on our stories. Actions such as these are one of my primary motivating factors when it comes to the site - and I've VERY happy with the way things are going!

Ciao - off to find the last few remaining buggers

The ''New'' Site

Welcome Back! It's been quite a busy weekend for LWD. If you're reading this post, your DNS server has received our update and you are looking at the new LWD! There is still a great deal of work to be done though, as you will soon notice. Below is a brief run-down of what has been completed so far, and what still needs to be done.
BETA theme / layout design of site
Content infrastructure created
Blocks / Modules configured
Main News content from old site has been imported
DNS Upated

To Do:
Add recent forum activity block
Import SETI Team news
Import Articles
Import Reviews
Update WebLinks content
Update Downloads content
Create "other missing pages" such as Store, About, Contact, etc.
Tweak / Revise theme
As you can tell, there's quite a lot still missing from the site. I've tried to make the trasition as smooth as possible, but when you have a site that has been online for over 4 years, moving and redesigning the whole thing is a lot of work. I'm hoping to have the majority of the items on my "To Do" list completed tomorrow. In the mean-time, feel free to browse around, create an account if you'd like (accounts that exist in our forum will not work on this site), and maybe even submit a few news items to us. If you do notice anything strange going on with the site, aside from missing content, please let me know by using the feedback link on the upper-left-hand side of the site.
