F@H: Featured Folder - Ghoonter
Posted on Monday, January 26 @ 01:11:08 PST by FatherTyme

Happy Monday ya’ll… I hope everyone is surviving the winter weather that it seems as though all are getting (except a few of us)… You have probably heard of this particular Folder before and most likely don’t know much about him, so here is your chance to meet one of your fellow teammates, Ghoonter!

Nattiebo: Hello, Ghoonter… Would you please give us some details about yourself… - Age, Sex, Student/Career?
Ghoonter: Hi Nattiebo. I am 29 years old (male) and I am a software engineer.

Nattiebo: Do you have any hobbies or interests other than computers?

Ghoonter: I spend a lot of time with my wife and kids doing normal family stuff. I enjoy the typical American hobbies like movie watching, ice cream and what not. I picked up the classical guitar about 6 months ago and have really enjoyed that. I am also a long time aquarium hobbyist with a focus on live plants. I used to do a lot of Latin dancing but with 2 kids and 1 on the way those days are pretty much gone.

Nattiebo: How did you get into Latin dancing and what is your favorite dance?

Ghoonter: My high school had a ballroom dance company and I tried out for it because all of my older brothers had done it and had a lot of fun. I took to it and danced, performed and competed for several years. For social dancing, I think cha-cha would be my favorite.

Nattiebo: Wow, you are quite the hobbyist! When is the next addition to the Ghoonter family due to arrive?

Ghoonter: Early March.

Nattiebo: Congrats! Are you ready for the arrival? Do you know if it will be a boy/girl? Any names picked out?

Ghoonter: Thank you! We really have not prepared much for the arrival yet. Maybe I am in denial – LOL. It looks like we are having a girl and we have been through the typical bantering of names but have not yet decided on one. My oldest daughter (4 years old) wants to name her Rascal.

Nattiebo: Are you going to teach Rascal how to fold or is it too early to determine that? 

Ghoonter: No folding for Rascal. Then she would just bug me to buy her more computers.

Nattiebo: After 6 months of playing the guitar, what is your best piece of music you can play?

Ghoonter: There are some Carcassi pieces that I like, and I can play one of the studies from Ferdinand Sor’s twenty studies.

Nattiebo: How did you get the name Ghoonter?

Ghoonter: LOL that is a funny question. I used to play Mechwarrior and my brother designed a massive mech and named it “GHOONTER”. When I signed up for folding and was asked for an alias – it was the first thing that came into my head.

Nattiebo: Does your brother know that you are using that name?

Ghoonter: Yes he does, but I don’t think he remembers where it came from.

Nattiebo: When did you become a Folding freak?

Ghoonter: I’m not sure. I think it was about a year ago… maybe less.

Nattiebo: Where did you learn to Fold (or first hear about it)?

Ghoonter: Bathomps got me into it.

Nattiebo: Did it take much convincing to get you to Fold or did he pretty much “have you at Hello?”

Ghoonter: I had several machines that idled most of the time, so it was good to put them to work.

Nattiebo: How did you come to know Bathomps?

Ghoonter: We met on tricycles about 25 years ago and for many years we lived in the same neighborhood.

Nattiebo: That’s pretty cool that you guys have been friends for so long… We all know that he is the master folder on the team… Could you at least tricycle faster than him back in the day?

Ghoonter: Haha, no I don’t think so. If I remember correctly he actually had a little bike instead of a tricycle.

Nattiebo: On how many machines are you currently Folding?

Ghoonter: It varies depending on my schedule. Right now I have 5 machines folding, 3 of which are very slow. The upside is that 2 of them are dual processor systems with hyperthreading, so I can run 4 folding consoles on each.

Nattiebo: Any plans to add on to your folding farm in the near (or not so near future)?
Ghoonter: I am pretty well maxed out right now.

Nattiebo: Are you an overclocker on your machines?

Ghoonter: I used to overclock on my older PIII systems, but I don’t bother with it anymore.

Nattiebo: Do you use any of the Folding add-ons to keep track of stats?

Ghoonter: No.

Nattiebo: What do you personally hope to accomplish by Folding?

Ghoonter: I want to put Bathomps in second place!

Nattiebo: Is this a short-term or a long-term goal, and have you developed already a plan of attack on how you will do this?

Ghoonter: Well, I have now accepted the fact that this will not happen. He has access to a lot more hardware than I do.

Nattiebo: Have you participated in or would you ever consider any other computing distributions?

Ghoonter: I did SETI for a little bit, but I like folding because it is for a good cause.

Nattiebo: Do you have any particular proteins that you favor and do you often check out which different proteins your computers are folding?

Ghoonter: Actually, I never look at what my machines are folding. I check them once a week or so just to make sure they are still folding something.

Nattiebo: What is the most exciting aspect about the LWD folding team?

Ghoonter: I enjoy checking out the team stats and reading the forums from time to time.

Nattiebo: What does your significant other or good friends think about your Folding habits?

Ghoonter: I keep my folding habit a secret.

Nattiebo: Your wife hasn’t noticed it on any of the machines?

Ghoonter: My computers at home do not fold.

Nattiebo: Will that ever change or is it set in stone that they will not fold?

Ghoonter: It is not set in stone, but my computers at home are usually only on in the evenings which is not ideal for folding.

Nattiebo: Has anyone at work noticed the mysterious Folding@Home program running in the background?

Ghoonter: Yes they have, some people get a little grumpy about it – LOL.

Nattiebo: Have you had any success in recruiting people to LWD?

Ghoonter: I tried once, but it didn’t stick.

Nattiebo: How did you find LWD in the first place?

Ghoonter: Bathomps

Nattiebo Any predictions on the Superbowl this year?
Ghoonter: Wow, is it Superbowl time again? Who is in it this year?

Nattiebo: If you could improve or change anything about the Folding@Home Project, what would it be?

Ghoonter: I guess it would be nice to pass up more teams.

Nattiebo: What do you think the best thing is about LWD?

Ghoonter: The little white dog.

Nattiebo: Well, thanks for letting us get to know you a little better. Do you have any final comments (free reign here)?

Ghoonter: I’m not a nerd… I just sound like one.
